by Yuvi K - December 16, 2023

Introduction

Para-jumble or jumbled sentences is an essential component of English grammar. It is used to test the knowledge of the writers on the positioning of a particular sentence in a given context. Para-jumbles also test the ability of writers to order the given sentences correctly. Mastering this concept will lead to better scores in various competitive exams, such as SSC, Bank PO, etc.

What Are Jumbled Sentences?

Jumbled sentences are where the writer has to arrange a set of sentences, which have been removed from a larger sentence, into a grammatically correct paragraph.

Let us look at an example to understand this better:

  • Sentence 1: (Banana ki kheti ka) cultivation is a lengthy process.
  • Sentence 2: The farmers irrigate the field regularly.
  • Sentence 3: Banana plants require a certain amount of sunlight.

Once the sentences are rearranged into their logical order, the paragraph will read:

Cultivation of Banana (ki kheti ka) is a lengthy process. The farmers irrigate the field regularly to ensure that the Banana plants get the right amount of sunlight.

Types of Jumbled Sentences

Jumbled sentences can be divided into two types based on the construction of the sentences:

Type 1

In this type of jumbled sentences, the sentences are provided in a jumbled manner without making any changes to the content and punctuation.

Type 2

In this type of jumbled sentences, the sentences are either in their complete form or have some missing words. The writer then needs to fill the blanks with the context of the sentences to make the paragraph based on the context provided.

Tips to Solve Jumbled Sentences

Tip 1: Carefully Read the Sentences

The first step while solving para-jumbles is to read the sentences carefully and understand the context of the paragraph. It is important to distinguish between the facts mentioned in the sentences and the opinions expressed in the sentences. It is also important to pay attention to the small details of the sentences.

Tip 2: Identify the Keywords

The next step is to identify the keywords in the sentences. The words that trigger the thought process are known as the keywords. It is important to identify these keywords as they will help in understanding the context of the sentences better.

Tip 3: Find the Logical Flow

Once the keywords are identified, the next step is to find the logical flow of the sentences. This can be done by grouping the sentences based on their context. It is important to identify the different points of view that are expressed in the sentences and group them accordingly.

Tip 4: Understand the Connectives

The connectives play a very important role in para-jumbles. The connectives can be defined as the words that are used to connect two ideas together or to bind them. Some common connectives that can be used to solve para-jumbles are, Therefore, However, Moreover, Besides, Consequently, etc.

Tip 5: Read the Para-jumbled Passage

Once the sentences are grouped and the connectives are identified, the next step is to read the para-jumbled passage. This will help in understanding the complete context of the sentences.

Conclusion

As we can see, para-jumbles are an important part of English grammar. A thorough understanding of the concept and the ability to rearrange the sentences in the right order is essential to master this concept. To solve para-jumbles, it is important to identify the keywords, understand the context, find the logical flow of the sentences, and identify the connectives in the sentences. With practice and patience, it is possible to become proficient in solving para-jumbles.
