Have you ever wondered how you can communicate with someone who’s across the globe from you in real-time? How can voice messages or text messages or video calls be sent hundreds of thousands of miles away in a matter of milliseconds? If yes, you must have heard of Satellite Communications.

What is Satellite Communication?

Satellite communication (उपग्रहीय संचार) is a type of communication that employs artificial satellites to transmit and receive information. By sending signals such as radio, television, telephone, or data through the atmosphere, these satellites are able to send information from one point on Earth to another.

Applications of Satellite Communication

This modern technology of Satellite Communications has become an essential form of communication in various fields, particularly in the military, government, television and radio broadcasting, satellite navigation, telecommunications, remote sensing and research.

Advantages of Satellite Communication

  • Reach: The signal can easily reach remote areas and isolated islands where terrestrial communication (भूमि की संचार) has not reached.
  • Reliability: Satellite communication is much more reliable, as there are no physical obstructions (barriers) in the atmosphere to prevent the signal from being sent or received.
  • Speed: It is much faster than terrestrial communication and transmission time is a lot less.
  • Cost: Satellite communication is much more cost-effective than its terrestrial counterpart.
  • Immunity to natural disasters: Satellite systems are also immune to natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes.

Types of Satellite Communication

Type Description
Broadcast Communication: This type of communication allows for one-way communication from the transmitter to the receiver using high frequencies.
Active Communication: This type of communication allows for two-way communication between the transmitter and receiver.
Passive Communication: This type of communication involves controlled reflection of wave signals in order to obtain real-time data.
Interactive Communication: This type of communication allows the receiver to interact with the satellite, which enables the user to modify and control the system accordingly.

How does Satellite Communication work?

Every satellite in orbit around the Earth has to move at a specific speed and in a specific orbit to maintain its orbital position. The transmission or reception of information takes place through the antenna on the satellite which is directed towards the Earth.

In order for transmission from the Earth to the satellite to take place, a high-powered transmitter and high-gain antenna is used to send the signal to the satellite. The high-frequency signal sent to the satellite is then received by the satellite’s sensitive receiver and antenna. After reception, the satellite will then amplify the received signal and retransmit it in the same direction as it was received.
