What is Sodium Thiosulphate?

Sodium thiosulphate (सोडियम थाइओसल्फेट ) is an inorganic compound, a salt made up of sodium and thiosulphate ions. It has a chemical formula, Na₂S₂O₃. It’s colourless, odourless and highly soluble in water. Sodium thiosulphate is used as a reducing agent, an antichlor, a preservative and in photography. It has even found industrial and medical uses.

Uses of Sodium Thiosulphate

Industrial Uses

Sodium thiosulphate is used for processing leathers and ore. It is used to remove chlorine from swimming pools, and for softening hard water for laundry use. It is also used to reduce rust in hose and pipe fittings.

Photographic Uses

Sodium thiosulphate is used in photography to bleach or “fix” photographs after they have been processed. It is also used to clean camera sensors of dirt and dust.

Medicinal Uses

Sodium thiosulphate has been found to be effective in treating several medical conditions, including cystinuria, hyperkalemia and leptospirosis. It is sometimes used as an eye wash to treat bacterial and fungal infections. It is also used to treat cyanide poisoning, to reduce the effects of radiation poisoning and to treat calcium deposits in the arteries.

Dosage Of Sodium Thiosulphate

Condition Dosage
Cyanide Poisoning 10% solution intravenously, at the rate of 10 ml/kg body weight
Radiation Poisoning 50-100 g intravenously.
Leptospirosis 9mg/kg body weight every 8-12 hours for 14 days

Safety Precautions

Sodium thiosulphate should be handled with great caution as it is an irritant and may cause contact dermatitis. Eye contact should be avoided as it can cause irritation, swelling and inflammation of the eyes. It is also toxic in high concentrations, and could cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain in case of accidental ingestion. It should therefore not be taken orally, and should be stored only in tightly sealed containers.
