When exploring electric circuits, two main types of current are generally discussed, direct current, or DC, and Alternating current, or AC. Alternating current (AC) is the type of current we use in our homes and businesses to power appliances, light bulbs, and household electronics. It has some distinct advantages over direct current, and it is considered to be the safer and more efficient method of transmission.

What is Alternating Current (AC)?

Alternating current is the alternative to direct current, or DC. In an AC circuit, the direction of current reverses, or alternates. This happens at a certain frequency, and the amount of times it alternates each second is expressed in hertz (Hz). Household voltage in the United States is typically split into two 120 Volt circuits; each is 120 Volts and has a frequency of 60 Hz. Most of the rest of the world uses single-phase and three-phase AC systems, the difference being the amount of power they are able to supply.

Benefits of Alternating Current (AC)

Alternating current has several advantages compared to direct current, such as costing less energy to transmit, and being able to use transformers to change voltage. Alternating current also has a higher degree of safety than direct current, because it is less susceptible to fatal electric shock. The differences between AC and DC circuits are important to understand when choosing which type of current to use for your project.

Types of AC Circuits

There are two main types of AC circuits: single-phase and three-phase. Single-phase circuits are the most common type of AC circuit, and they use a single power line to send energy from the generator to the appliance or load. Three-phase circuits use three power lines, which can be used to achieve the same voltage as a single-phase circuit, but with higher capacity and more efficient transmission.

AC Circuit Components

In an AC circuit, the components used to construct the circuit differ from those used in DC circuits. AC circuits use inductors and capacitors in addition to the traditional resistors. The inductors, or coils, can be used to increase the current through the circuit by slowing down the decrease in current. The capacitor is used to store the energy produced by the inductor, and it works by blocking the flow of current.

Circuit Analysis

In order to analyze an AC circuit, you must have a basic understanding of electrical theory and laws. When analyzing an AC circuit, you will use the same laws that are used in DC circuits, such as Ohm’s law. Phasor Diagrams
