Introduction to Average Formula in Mathematics

Everyone loves numbers and the beauty of mathematics lies in its ability to be used in a plethora of different scenarios. An integral part of mathematics is averages or the mean. Averaging is used to obtain a value that is generally representative of a set of numbers. In this article, we explore the average formula in mathematics and explain how to calculate the mean of a set of numbers.

Understanding average formula in mathematics

Average (Mean) or औसत ( औसत मान ) is a mathematical expression used to find the middle of a given set of values. In other words, it is the numerical value obtained by dividing the sum of a set of values by the total number of values in the set. In simple terms, it is the average of a given set of numbers.

Formula to find the mean

The average of a given set of numbers or values can be calculated using the below formula:

Mean = (Sum of Numbers) ÷ (Total Numbers)

Where

Mean is the average of the set of numbers

Sum of Numbers is the sum of all the numbers in the set

Total Numbers is the total number of numbers present in the set

Solved Example Using Average Formula in Mathematics

Let us consider the following example where the mean of the numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 is calculated using the average formula in mathematics:

Solution:

Applying the average formula:

Mean = (Sum of Numbers) ÷ (Total Numbers)

= (3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7) ÷ (5)

= 25 ÷ 5

= 5

Hence, the Mean of the given set of numbers is 5.

It is easy to calculate the mean of a set of numbers using the average formula in mathematics. This formula is applicable for all types of sets consisting of numbers or values and can be easily used to calculate the average of the given set of numbers.
