Chemistry in Everyday Life: The Unseen Science Around Us

by Yuvi K - December 16, 2023

What is Chemistry in Everyday Life?

Chemistry in everyday life is the science of using molecules and atoms to produce and utilize energy to sustain life. It is the study of the structure, composition and properties of matter and how they interact with one another to form new compounds and materials. Chemistry is present in almost every aspect of our daily lives, from the food we eat, the hygiene products we use, and the medicines we take. Every time something changes, either to an object, to the environment, or even to a person, chemistry is involved. By understanding the role of chemistry in everyday life, we can gain a better appreciation for the science that is all around us.

Chemistry and the Development of Everyday Objects

Chemistry plays a major role in the development of everyday objects, especially when it comes to plastics and synthetic materials. A great example of this is the automobile. Cars are made from a variety of metals and nonmetals, which have all been engineered through the application of chemical principles. The plastic parts and upholstery are also products of chemistry, and they are essential components of modern cars.

Food and Nutrition

Food and nutrition is another area where chemistry has a significant impact. The food we eat contains various nutrients that provide fuel for our bodies, and these nutrients are the product of chemical reactions in the Earth’s environment. Vitamins, minerals and proteins are all vital components of food, and the process of digestion requires the action of enzymes – biological molecules – in order to absorb their benefits. Moreover, chemistry provides us with synthetic preservatives which enable us to store food for long periods of time.

Medicine

Medicine is one of the areas of chemistry that has seen the most advancement over the past century. The process of understanding and synthesizing new drugs involves a great deal of chemical knowledge. From antibiotics to life-saving treatments for cancer, chemistry has enabled medical practitioners to drastically improve the quality and longevity of human life.

Hygiene

Hygiene is another fundamental aspect of everyday life. Soap and detergents are products of chemistry, as they use complex combinations of materials in order to break down the oil and dirt on our skin and clothes. Disinfectants are also extremely important, as they effectively kill bacteria and microbes which can lead to illness. Without these materials, our lives would be much more difficult.

Pollution

Unfortunately, chemistry can also be used to create pollution. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming. Pollutants from factories and vehicles also pollute the air we breathe, as well as our waterways. The only way to reduce the impact of these pollutants is to apply more knowledge of chemistry and understand the best ways to use the materials we have access to.

Conclusion

In conclusion, chemistry in everyday life is an essential and fundamental part of our existence. Without it, it would be impossible to sustain our current quality of life. Through its role in the development of new tools and materials, in the food we eat, in medicine, and in hygiene, chemistry impacts our lives in countless ways. In order to preserve our environment and build a better world for the future, we must continue to learn and apply the principles of chemistry in our everyday lives.
