What is Decantation?
Decantation is a physical separation method used to separate different components of a mixture. This is done by slowly pouring the mixture down a steep angle, thus allowing the lighter components of the solution to be gently skimmed off the surface and transferred to another flask.

The Steps of Decantation
Decantation consists of the following steps:
- Converge: (Sarvastidhara सर्वस्तिधार): Prepare the necessary laboratory materials. This includes glassware such as cylinders, funnels, and beakers, as well as an inclined surface upon which the mixture is to be decanted.
- Separation: (Vibhajan विभाजन):Transfer the mixture from its original container to the inclined surface. Preparing a sloping beaker with the narrow neck downwards is a commonly used method.
- Skim the surface:Use a spoon to carefully scoop off the lighter components of the mixture that are floating on the surface without disturbing the denser components that settled out.
- Collect the product: (Uptadhikaran उप्ताधिकारन) Allow the collected components to settle in their destination vessel and discard the remaining liquid.
Uses of Decantation
Decantation has a wide range of applications, including the separation of salts from minerals, the purification of soils, and the isolation of liquids from suspension mixtures. It is also used in the manufacture of paints, dyes, inks, and insecticides.
Safety precautions for Decantation
As with any chemical process, safety should be the first priority when performing decantation. Always wear safety glasses and protective clothing when working with hazardous chemicals. Use pipettes and other glassware to avoid contact with the hazardous materials, and ensure that the laboratory is properly ventilated.
