Introduction to Elements, Compounds and Molecules in Chemistry

Chemistry is a branch of science concerned with the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter. It has a number of sub-disciplines, some of which are physical chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. At the core of chemistry is the study of the building blocks of matter, including elements, compounds and molecules. A basic understanding of these is essential to develop an understanding of how the world around us works.

Elements

The simplest type of matter is an element.  An element is a substance composed of atoms with the same atomic number, an atomic number being the number of protons in the nucleus of the atom. All elements are composed of the same type of atom, and these atoms all have the same mass number and chemical properties.

Currently, there are 118 known elements in the world, with all matter being composed of combinations of these elements. The most common elements are oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen, which together make up as much as 96% of the earth’s crust. To better understand elements, they can be placed on the periodic table of elements. This is a chart that arranges all elements into categories according to their properties.

Compounds

If two or more elements are combined, they form a compound. A compound is a substance made up of two or more types of atoms bonded together. These bonds can be either covalent, ionic, or metallic in nature. Compounds have different properties from their component elements. For example, when hydrogen and oxygen combine, they form the compound water, which has different properties from either the hydrogen or oxygen it is made of.

Molecules

When two or more atoms of the same element bond together, they form a molecule. A molecule is a group of atoms held together by bonds. Molecules are made up of one or more atoms, or they may be a combination of atoms from different elements. The properties of molecules depend on the atoms they are composed of and how they are bonded together.

Conclusion

Elements, compounds and molecules are the building blocks of chemistry. They are the fundamental units of matter and are essential for understanding how the world around us works. Understanding the concepts of elements, compounds and molecules forms the foundation of the study of chemistry and is essential to develop a basic understanding of the chemistry of our world.
