Friction – Understanding The Force That Opposes Motion

Imagine a car is moving on a flat surface. It accelerates quickly and soon reaches a high speed. Does the car continue to move at the same speed? What happens to it eventually?

The answer is that it slows down and eventually comes to a stop. Have you ever asked yourself why? The answer lies in the force of friction.

What Is Friction?

Friction (तरल विरुद्धता) is the force that opposes the motion of two objects rubbing against each other. This force operates when two surfaces come in contact and there is a relative motion between them. In order for friction to operate, the two surfaces must be touching each other and must be in motion.

Types Of Friction

There are two types of friction – Static Friction (स्थिर तरल विरुद्धता) and Kinetic Friction (गतिशील तरल विरुद्धता).

Static Friction

Static Friction (स्थिर तरल विरुद्धता) is the force that opposes the motion of an object when it is stationary. It is the force that must be overcome before motion can occur. We can think of a block of wood on the ground. Even if we push it with a force, it will not move until the force of the static friction is greater than the pushing force.

Kinetic Friction

Kinetic Friction (गतिशील तरल विरुद्धता) is the force that opposes the motion of an object when it is in motion. It is the force that causes an object to slow down and eventually stop. We can think of the same block of wood that we moved with a pushing force. Now, the force of the kinetic friction comes into play and it starts to slow down the motion of the block of wood.

Factors Affecting Friction

The magnitude of the force of friction is affected by the following factors.

Surface Properties Of Materials

The surface properties of the materials in contact play an important role in determining the amount of friction. Materials that have rough surfaces have more friction as compared to materials with smooth surfaces.

Additional Forces

Additional forces such as gravity and the normal reaction force can also affect the magnitude of the friction. The friction is greater when the additional forces are greater.

Numerical Comparison Of The Types Of Friction

Despite being a force that opposes motion, friction is a very important force in our lives. It helps us perform essential activities such as walking, driving, and using tools. It also plays a crucial role in keeping our environment clean by preventing dust particles from moving around freely.
