What Is An Optical Bench?

Optical benches are microscopes used in physics to analyze light. It is most often used in scientific experiments to investigate the properties of visible light, but it can also be used to study lasers, infra-red, ultraviolet and other forms of electromagnetic radiation. In an optical bench, beams of light are separated and analyzed, measured, compared and scrutinized with other light beams.

How Does It Work?

Parallel & Coaxial Beam Path

This provides consistent variations in the direction of the beam and is best suited for measuring angles. The other beam path is called a coaxial beam path. Here, the elements, such as lenses and mirrors, are arranged in a circle, with the light source at the centre. This arrangement is better suited for introducing more complex variations in the light beam.

Instrumentation

An optical bench can be a standalone instrument or it can be configured with instrumentation. The most common type of instrumentation is a CCD camera, which can measure the intensity of the light beam at each point. It can also be used to measure the overall intensity of the beam, as well as the dispersion of the colours of the beam. Similarly, an optical spectrum analyzer can be used to measure the spectrum of the light, while a power meter can measure the power of the light.

Applications in Physics

Optical benches are used in a wide range of physics experiments. In optics, they can be used to measure the properties of light, incluing its diffraction, refraction, interference and polarization. In astronomy, they can be used to measure the concentration of stars in a galaxy.
