But what if such motion could be sustained indefinitely, or at least for a very long time? Researchers have sought out the answer to this question for centuries: Could perpetual motion exist? Could we achieve an endlessly self-sustaining machine?

What is Perpetual Motion?

Perpetual (अनन्त) motion is the hypothetical movement of an object or machine which continues indefinitely without external sources of energy. The concept originated in the 16th century, when philosopher-scientists first began attempting to create machines that would move and keep doing so indefinitely.

The Reality of Perpetual Motion

The belief in perpetual motion has been around for hundreds of years, and there have been several attempts to create machines that can generate constant motion. But these attempts have ultimately been proven unsuccessful due to various limitations, such as energy loss, the impossibility of frictionless motion, and the law of conservation of energy.

Issues with Perpetual Motion Machines

Firstly, any machine or object that uses friction will eventually lose energy. For instance, a flywheel uses energy to spin, and as it does, it loses energy due to friction with its components and the air around it. As a result, the flywheel eventually stops spinning.

Additionally, a perpetual motion machine would require frictionless motion, which is something that is impossible in reality. Friction is always present in any form of motion; it is the force that is generated when two surfaces are in contact and one object is moving relative to the other.

It is impossible to eliminate friction entirely, and as a result, any machine or object that is attempting to achieve perpetual motion will eventually lose energy due to friction between its parts and the air it is moving through.

The Law of Conservation of Energy and Perpetual Motion

The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed — it can only be transferred and changed from one form to another. This means that any machine claiming to achieve perpetual motion must be able to create energy from nothing, which is impossible according to the law of conservation of energy.

This law is a fundamental principle of physics that has been proven experimentally and theoretically, and no perpetual motion device has ever been able to demonstrate a violation of it.
