What Does A Resistor Do?
A resistor helps to control the amount of current flowing in a circuit. It restricts the flow of electrons so that the circuit can operate within safe parameters. For example, if a regular, unmodified circuit had too much current flowing through it, it could cause it to damage the circuit, or even cause a fire, if the current were not reduced appropriately. When a resistor is added to the circuit, it reduces the current flowing through it, protecting the circuit from damage.

Fixed Resistor

Variable Resistor
Unlike the fixed resistor, a variable resistor has an adjustable value. This type of resistor has a contact or ‘wiper’ that can be moved along a resistance track to vary the amount of resistance across it. This type of resistor can be used to adjust the volume, brightness and speed of electric circuits.

Other than the two main types of resistors, there are several other types of resistors available. They include rheostats, light dependent resistors, thermistors and more.

Why Are Resistors Used?

- To provide feedback in electronic amplifiers. Also known as a feedback resistor, it provides feedback to the input of an amplifier and helps maintain stability and prevent distortion.
