Introduction to Units of Resistance

Electricity plays an important role in most of our day to day activities. Any electric circuit requires a certain amount of resistance for it to be functional. This resistance is usually measured in units known as ohms. Resistance is important as it helps to bring an electric current to the desired level and helps in preventing similar circuits from crashing and creating havoc. Units of Resistance measure the resistance between two points in a circuit. Some of the commonly used units of resistance are kilo-ohms, mega-ohms, and giga-ohms. In this article, we will discuss these units in depth and understand how they are used in different contexts.

Kilo-ohms (किलो-ओम)

Kilo-ohms are the most commonly used units of resistance and are usually abbreviated to ‘KΩ’. A kilo-ohm is a unit of measurement equal to one thousand ohms (1KΩ=1000Ω). It is the standard measure for resistance and is used for measuring electrical current in both domestic and commercial circuits. In most cases, a kilo-ohm is enough to provide the desired voltage to the circuit and is mainly used in measuring resistance in wires, switches, and other electrical components.

Mega-ohms (मेगा-ओम)

A Mega-ohm, abbreviated as MΩ is one-million ohms (1MΩ=1000KΩ) which is a much higher resistance compared to a Kilo-ohm. It is usually used in dealing with higher voltages and more complex circuitry. These units are commonly used in industries dealing with electronics, telecommunications, and computer programming.

Giga-ohms (गिगा-ओम)

Gadga-ohms are one billion ohms (1GΩ= 1000MΩ). This makes it the highest unit of resistance. It is the highest resistance voltage used in any circuit and is mostly used in extremely intricate engineering and telecom related projects. Due to its high resistance, it is usually used in life-saving medical devices and expensive equipment.

Mega-ohms and Giga-ohms are higher units of resistance which are used for measuring complex resistances in higher voltage circuits. These units of resistance help electricians in being precise about the voltage, preventing dangerous electrical accidents.
