The elements of the nitrogen family share some common characteristics and properties. The first two elements, nitrogen and phosphorus, form compounds with non-metals as well as with oxygen, sulfur, and halogens. These elements are primarily found in the gaseous and solid states.

The next three elements (As, Sb, Bi) generally form compounds with non-metals and oxygen. They have lower melting points and boiling points than the first two elements. Arsenic and antimony are both found in the solid and liquid states, while bismuth is in solid state only. All of these elements have a tendency to form covalent bonds.
