Out of the two carboxylic acid groups, one hydrogen is attached to the hydroxy group and the other to the carbon atom. Phenols can be derived via two methods; by reducing an aromatic carbonyl compound, or by dehydrating phenyl alcohol.

The phenolic oxygen is relatively acidic and donates a hydrogen ion (H+) to the aromatic ring as a Bronsted-Lowry acid. Since the electrons from the hydrogen atom are now delocalized from the oxygen atom, phenols can be oxidized to its conjugate form which is capable of undergoing electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions.
