This group of elements, which is located in the leftmost side of the periodic table, is comprised of elements like Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium, and Francium. They are known as group 1 elements, and they all share what are considered to be alkali metal characteristics. Properties of Alkali Metals

The outermost shell of an alkali metal is the s-orbital, which consists of a single electron. This electron is easily donated or accepted during chemical reactions, making alkali metals extremely reactive. As a result, alkali metals can form ionic bonds with other elements, resulting in a wide variety of compounds.

Uses of Alkali Metals

Alkali metals play a key role in many industries and products. For example, Sodium is used in the production of bleach, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and baking powder. Potassium is used in the production of fertilizers, and Lithium is used in the production of batteries. In addition, rubidium, cesium, and francium are used in research applications.

Reactivity of Alkali Metals

As mentioned previously, alkali metals are highly reactive, and this reactivity increases as one moves down the group. For example, Lithium is the least reactive of all alkali metals, whereas Francium is the most reactive. This is due to the fact that the atomic radius increases as one moves down the group, meaning that the valence electron is further away from the nucleus, which makes it easier to donate or accept electrons.
