Circuit Breakers: Safeguarding Electrical Systems

by Yuvi K - December 16, 2023

What are Circuit Breakers?

Circuit breakers are a device which is used to protect electrical systems from damage due to overloads. They ‘trip’ (ट्रिप करते हैं) or switch off the circuit once the electrical system is overloaded. This is done to prevent a short circuit or complete power failure which can cause a fire or other damages.

Types of Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers have two types – thermal and magnetic.

1. Thermal Circuit Breakers

Thermal circuit breakers work on the principle of heat dissipation. These are made up of a bimetallic strip which get heated when there is an overload in the circuit. The bimetallic strip moves and helps to open the circuit whenever an overload occurs. These are designed such that it will reset automatically when the temperature reduces.

2. Magnetic Circuit Breakers

Magnetic circuit breakers contain an electromagnet or solenoid. The electromagnet pulls a small metal tab connected to the breaker switch and helps opened the circuit when an overload occurs. These can also be used to switch off the power in case of a short circuit and helps to protect electrical equipment from damage.

Features of a Circuit Breaker

Features Description
Adjustable Current Rating The circuit breaker has an adjustable current rating to cater different types of loads.
Insulation The circuit breaker is made of a good quality grade of plastic and has an extra layer of insulation for safety.
Resettable The circuit breaker is designed to reset automatically when the overloaded is reduced.

Benefits of Circuit Breakers

Using circuit breakers help in saving of energy and appliances from getting damaged due to overheating of electrical systems. Circuit breakers also make it safe for a user to turn on or switch off the power supply in an emergency. Circuit breakers are used in all types of industrial and residential applications.

The benefits of using Circuit Breakers are :

  • Delayed trip – It will take some time to trip the breaker in case of overloads which makes it safe for the system and the user.
  • Easy Installation – Circuit breakers are easy to install and can be customized as per the requirements.
  • Safety – It helps to protect electrical devices from getting damaged due to an overload.
  • Prolonged life – Using circuit breakers helps in extending the life time of electrical systems as it will reduce the damage caused due to high electrical currents.

Conclusion

Circuit Breakers are an essential device for safeguarding electrical systems from getting damaged due to overloads. It helps in reducing energy consumption and increases the life span of electrical equipment. They are also easy to install and use.
