What is Environmental Engineering?

Environmental engineering is a branch of engineering which focus on providing sustainable solutions for the betterment of environment. Its primary aim is to protect, restore and improve terrestrial, aquatic and atmospheric environment. It involves use of principles, technology and knowledge that are acquired in fields like engineering, natural sciences and ecology. Environmental engineering also looks at public policy related to environment and the potential impact of different regulatory processes. It is an expanding field which involves latest knowledge and innovative solutions for the betterment of the environment. Environmental engineers create solutions that maintain public and ecosystem health and prevents atmospheric, water as well as soil pollution. Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Solutions

Sustainability is one of the main objectives of Environmental Engineering. It involves creating solutions which can protect and maintain environment for long time in balance. Sustainability is the need of the hour as it is a long-term approach towards the environmental protection and management. It requires an integrated approach of reducing use of non-renewable energy sources and restoring degraded environment. We must take into consideration two prime aspects – reducing the environmental degradation and harm caused to society.

Environmental engineers are continuously discovering solutions which can help to reduce the environmental impacts and eventually create a better world with fewer emissions. Sustainable Technologies for Environmental Engineers

Environmental engineers use sustainable technologies to minimize the negative impacts on environment while maximizing the positive ones. Some of the sustainable technologies used by environmental engineers are:

1. Groundwater Recharge:

Water is increasingly becoming scarce and over-extraction of ground water has become a major issue across the globe. To solve this, environmental engineers are working on groundwater recharge technology. In this, ground water aquifers are flooded with rain water or surface water collected from other sources. This can help to maintain the balance of ground water in the environment.
