What is Human Blood Biology?

Human Blood Biology is the study of the composition and function of the different components of the human bloodstream, as well as the physiological properties that they exhibit. Human blood is a complex and dynamic liquid that contains vital cells, proteins, minerals, and other molecules necessary for the body to survive. It plays a crucial role in many aspects of health and wellbeing.

Blood is composed of red and white cells, platelets, and plasma, and it has various functions that help to maintain the body’s homeostasis. Red blood cells deliver oxygen to body tissues and organs, white blood cells fight off infection and aid the body’s defense system, platelets help to foster the formation of clots that stop bleeding, and plasma helps to transport other blood cells and substances throughout the body.

Exploring the Components of Human Blood Biology

Blood is composed of two main components, the cells and the plasma. The cells, which make up almost half of the blood volume, are suspended in the plasma. Plasma is a slightly-yellowish liquid that constitutes the other half of the blood volume and is made up mostly of water, but also contains proteins, glucose, minerals, etc.

Red Blood Cells (RBCs)

Red Blood Cells (RBCs) or erythrocytes (रक्त कोशिकाओं (ईर्थ्रोसाइटों)), as they are medically known, are the most abundant cells in the bloodstream. They are small and disk-shaped, and they are responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. They also transport carbon dioxide back from the body to the lungs to be exhaled out.

White Blood Cells (WBCs)

White Blood Cells (WBCs) or leukocytes (लव्यकोशिकाओं (लेयोकोसाइटों)), as they are medically known, form part of the body’s defense system against bacteria, viruses, and other foreign invaders. Each type of white blood cell performs a different function, and their collective roles include engulfing and destroying bacteria, producing antibodies to attack virus-infected cells, and releasing chemicals that fight off inflammation.

Platelets

Platelets or thrombocytes (थ्रोम्बोसाइट (थ्रोम्बोसाइटों)), are small circular cells that help to form blood clots so that bleeding can be stopped quickly in case of injury or tissue damage. Platelets also contain growth factors which play a role in healing wounds.

Plasma

Plasma is the liquid component of blood that acts as an extracellular matrix which transports the cells present in blood throughout the body and also transports other vital substances such as nutrients, hormones, and metabolic waste. Plasma is composed mostly of water, but it also contains various proteins, including albumin, globulins, and fibrinogen, as well as salts, sugars, lipids, organic molecules, etc.
