Introduction to The Code of Life: DNA and RNA

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) form the code of life, which is found in the nucleus of once living organisms. Every living thing is made up of billions of cells, and within each cell is found a unique set of instructions known as the code of life.

What is DNA?

DNA is the genetic material found in almost all living organisms including humans, animals, plants, fungi, and even some bacteria and viruses. It contains a long chain of molecules known as nucleotides, which carry the instructions needed for every living thing to grow and function. These instructions are known as genes, which are passed down from one generation to the next.

What is RNA?

RNA (ribonucleic acid) is a single-stranded molecule that facilitates the production of proteins from the instructions stored in DNA. It is similar to DNA in structure but is much smaller and more mobile. It is found in all living organisms and carries out many of the same functions as DNA.

DNA vs. RNA: What’s the Difference?

The main difference between DNA and RNA is the type of sugar they contain. DNA contains the sugar deoxyribose, while RNA contains the sugar ribose. This difference gives DNA and RNA very different properties.

Functions of DNA

DNA is responsible for storing genetic information in the form of instructions for the production of proteins and the inheritance of genetic characteristics. It also ensures that cells can replicate and reproduce accurately.

Functions of RNA

RNA plays a crucial role in the translation of genetic information by serving as an intermediary between DNA and the proteins that control the cell’s functions. It also plays an important role in the regulation of gene expression and the formation of new proteins.
