What Causes Ozone Layer Depletion?

The main cause of the ozone problem is an increase in the concentration of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) released in the atmosphere. ODS is made up of man-made chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), halons, and various other gases. The most common ODS are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were used for many years in applications such as refrigeration, air conditioning, packaging, and aerosol sprays.

These rays can cause skin cancer, cataracts, suppress the immune system, and may even cause death in humans and other animals.

Increased exposure to UV radiation can also damage plant life. This can lead to reduced crop yields, increased risk of plant diseases, and irreversible damage to ecosystems. UV radiation may also cause global warming, as it increases the amount of heat trapped in the atmosphere.

This includes promoting green technologies, replacing existing appliances and vehicles with energy-efficient ones, and reducing the amount of energy used in buildings.
