Light Propagation – Definitions and Overview

Light propagation is the transmission of light from one point to another in a consistent and orderly manner. In physics, light is treated as a wave, and the path it takes is known as its propagation vector. Rectilinear propagation of light is a form of propagation that happens when the wave moves in a straight line, without any deviation.

What is Rectilinear Propagation?

Rectilinear propagation (सिंहावलोकन in Hindi) is the motion of light in a straight line, or a line that is tangent to the wavefront. In this type of propagation, light travels in a single direction, without any direction change or refraction.

Rectilinear propagation of light is common in free space, or in a medium with uniform refractive index, such as air or a vacuum. If the refractive index of the medium varies, however, the path of the light ray may curve or even split, due to refraction or reflection.

Rectilinear Propagation and its Properties

Property Description
Velocity The speed at which light travels in a straight line is determined by its i) frequency, ii) refractive index of the medium in which it is travelling, and iii) polarization.
Path When light propagates in a straight line, the path of the light is known as a light ray.
Direction The direction of the light ray is determined by its angle of incidence (प्रवेश कोण in Hindi). This is the angle between the ray and the normal surface of the medium in which it is travelling.
Refraction When light passes through a medium of varying refractive indices, it gets refracted. This causes the path of the ray to deviate.
Intensity The intensity of light decreases as it travelling farther from its source. This is known as inverse square law of light and occurs due to the decrease in the area covered by the light wave.
Polarization Polarization of light is the orientation of its electromagnetic waves in a particular direction. Depending on the orientation of the waves, the polarization could be linear, circular or randomly polarized.

Types of Rectilinear Propagation

  • Geometrical Optics: This type of rectilinear propagation of light is used to study the behavior of light using the laws of reflection and refraction.
  • Physical Optics: It is used to look at light propagation from an electromagnetic point of view, with its wave properties such as interferometry and diffraction.
  • Wave Optics: It is used to investigate the wave-like nature of the light.

Applications of Rectilinear Propagation

Rectilinear propagation of light has a wide range of applications, some of which are listed below:

  • Optical fibers: Optical fibers are made of glass or plastic fibers that act as waveguides to guide light through them. These fibers are designed to allow light to propagate in a single straight line.
  • Light filters: Rectilinear light propagation can be applied in the design of light filters and lenses, which are used to focus light to a particular area.
  • Laser range finders: Laser range finders make use of rectilinear propagation to calculate distances between objects using a laser beam.
  • Computer monitors: Computer monitors use a combination of rectilinear and curved light propagation to create the image on the screen.
  • Telecommunication: Rectilinear propagation of light is used in telecommunication. Light is used to send information through optical fibers.
