Introduction to Molecular Bond: Sigma and Pi Bonds
Molecular bonds are principally what hold atoms together in molecules. We need to understand exactly what molecules are and then decipher how molecular bonds work between these atoms, to best explain the two principle forms of molecular bonding: sigma and pi bonds. A molecule is a stable chemistry unit consisting of two or more atoms held together by molecular bonds. Let us understand both sigma and pi bonds better.
Sigma Bond
Sigma bond is the simplest type of molecular bond formed between two atoms. It most often uses the 2s orbital of both atoms in the bonding process, as the nearest orbital distance from the nucleus of each atom comes from the s orbitals. In essence, a sigma bond is formed by the end-on overlapping of the atomic orbitals.
Pi Bond
While a sigma bond is formed by the end-on overlapping of two orbitals, a pi bond is a bond formed when there is side-on overlapping of the orbitals. Pi bonds are considerably weaker than sigma bonds, but are nonetheless an important factor in chemical bonding. Pi bonds are believed to have more diffuse, and stronger shape compared to sigma bonds, due to the nature of side-on overlapping.
Difference Between Sigma and Pi Bond:
The main difference between a sigma and a pi bond is that sigma bonds are made up of the head-on overlap of two orbitals, whereas pi bonds are the result of side-on overlapping of the bond orbitals. As a result, sigma bonds are considered to be stronger than pi bonds and more rigid. This is because the pi bond has a larger overlap, with the nucleus being more shielded, thereby being weaker.
