The Power of the Hydrogen Bond in Chemistry

by Yuvi K - December 16, 2023

What is a Hydrogen Bond?

A hydrogen bond is an electromagnetic force that forms between two atoms having a difference in their electronegativity. This bond is formed between the atoms of a single molecule or between two molecules of different substances. The strong attraction between the opposite charges of two atoms is what forms the hydrogen bond. This bond is present between atoms of nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine which are known as hydrogen bond donors in molecules such as water. It results in substances having different properties than those of non-polar molecules.

Importance of Hydrogen Bond in Chemistry

The hydrogen bond is crucial in understanding, predicting, and manipulating the chemical processes that are responsible for the interactions within a molecule and also between different molecules. Hydrogen bonds play important roles in structure formation, the behavior of liquids, solids, polymers, and are accountable for the unique properties of biological molecules.

1. Structure Formation in Molecules

The hydrogen bond helps in the formation of molecules and their structure. These bonds exist in many molecular mixtures and are mainly present in polar molecules such as water as well as molecules that contain nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine. The hydrogen bond is responsible for the formation of a bridge between two molecules which holds them together forming a larger structure which is held together by hydrogen bonds.

2. Unique Properties of Biological Molecules

The structure of biological molecules is mostly composed of polymers chains such as proteins, DNA, and other complex macromolecules. Hydrogen bonds are responsible for the stability and third-dimensional conformation of these molecules. The bonds are also responsible for many of the properties such as binding affinity, elasticity, and catalytic activity of biological molecules.

3. Interaction between Liquids and Solids

Hydrogen bonds are important in understanding the interaction between different liquids and solids. These bonds are responsible for the cohesive behavior of liquids and the adhesion of different liquids to solids. The formation and stability of many solid polymers also depend on hydrogen bond formation.

4. Characteristics of Liquid Solutions

The characteristic properties such as viscosity, surface tension, and vapor pressure of liquid solutions also depend on the presence and strength of hydrogen bonds in the solution. The strength of the hydrogen bond affects the vapor pressure of the solution and the vapor pressure decreases when the strength of the hydrogen bonds increases.
